Eric Mabius, 27, formerly of Amherst, now of Santa Monica, Calif., is uniquely qualified to talk about films: He acts in them. Most recently seen onscreen in "Cruel Intentions," Mabius, who graduated from Amherst Regional High School, first garnered good reviews for his role as the object of Dawn Wiener's affections in "Welcome to the Dollhouse," and is currently in Utah, shooting the third installment of "The Crow."
His favorite film?
"Hands down, 'Life is Beautiful,' " Mabius said. "(Writer, actor and director) Roberto Benigni is a genius. We haven't seen that kind of physical comedian and emotionally resonant actor in a very long time."
There are many actors who can do one or the other, Mabius said, but it's rare to find one who can do both.
Mabius diplomatically said he hadn't seen any really bad movies in the past year, but did admit that he was disappointed by "Affliction," the film version of the Russell Banks book that stars Nick Nolte and James Coburn.
"It was so over the top, and in other places, there wasn't enough given. I didn't think the actors were used effectively. Coburn's character was one-dimensional, and Nolte didn't have the career-making performance everyone said he did," Mabius said.
